Update 5-1-2025 - May Day or Mayday
Backroads and Ballplayers Weekly is a free publication. The regular issue will post each Monday.
May 1…
Happy May Day - In various churches around the world, this day is observed as a day of celebration and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. When Susan (my wife and Director of Operations) was a child, she and her brother and sisters would pick wild flowers and make small arrangements for friends and neighbors. They would place them at the door, knock, and run away. It was a special day that she shared with students during her 35 years as a teacher.
Mayday - “Mayday” is also known as an international distress signal. The roots of this distress term come from French, where the term "m'aider" translates to "help me." For the Razorback pitching staff, it is Mayday.
The Baseball Hogs are obviously holding open tryouts for pitchers, an unpleasant thing to do in May. They need to find one, or maybe four or five. Never count out Dave Van Horn. We will know more when I post next week’s column on Monday.

A Tribute to a Cy Young Award Winner by Arkansas SABR’s Madison McEntire
Coincidentally, the SABR BioProject tribute to an ex-Razorback who became an outstanding major league pitcher went live yesterday. Written by Madison McEntire, President of the Robinson-Kell (Arkansas) Chapter of SABR, the Cliff Lee story is much more than a tribute to a Cy Young Award winner. It is a story about family, courage, and perseverance.
Please read and share this outstanding contribution to Arkansas baseball history.
